You may need a crash course in football video game history, if hearing about all the innovations and improvements that Xbox Madden 10 offers still hasn't moved you. On one hand, it's probably not too cool to say Xbox Madden 10 is great, just because it stands out next to crap from 30 years ago. On the other hand, after a closer examination of the older football video games, it's easier to comprehend why Xbox Madden 10 has been at the center of such unadulterated adulation. Certainly, there was a huge, untapped market for football video games, when the first generation of console games made their debut. The bad news, though, was that video game technology was still in the "post-Pong" phase, and the games reflected those limitations. The buzzword for this one was "all the excitement" of the real thing, as the game publishers tried to sell their captive audience on this one.
They didn't even try to make those guys look like people. Rough, but true. And if the picture has you cringing, you can only imagine what the gameplay is like. From a technological standpoint, things were so basic, that multiple players moving at once meant that the only thing extreme about this game was the flickering of the players. It would take a few more years before anything like that took place. Technology had caught up, albeit slightly, to gamers' football desires, to the point where this game has taken on an iconic status for gamers today. It's relatively simple to see why it was such a mega-popular hit - before this, nobody really attempted to make a football video game that was this sophisticated. This was the ultimate step up in football video games for a long time, so gamers really proclaimed this one the best football game out there, year after year. Today, there's even a new incarnation of the game, and with that is a renewed reverence for it. That being said, as much as everyone digs that one, Xbox Madden 10 is in an entirely different league. Hard to believe how much these games have improved since they first came on the scene. Guess it's a waste of time to do too much putting down of the other, less sophisticated football video games. You've gotten the point. They may have been flawed, but we needed those older games as a "springboard" to what we have today. Of course, Xbox Madden 10 has really kicked this one over the goal posts, which has the video game world pretty pleased. The reviews are as positive as the reaction from the gamers themselves - it's a hit with the fans as well as the video game sites.
